Sending Sunshine Card

For today’s project, I’m creating a “Sun Rays Card” for the “Sending Sunshine Hop” for Jeanie Ellis.  Jeanie is going through some difficulties right now, so we are sending some sunshine her way.

Be sure to show her some love by checking out all videos and posts of all the folks participating in the hop (listed below) … and by stopping by her YouTube channel too!

Sending Sunshine

As usual, I’m creating a card for today’s project.

Since this is a sunshine theme hop, I had a little trouble deciding on a design for my card. And because I live in Florida and love all things sunshine, summer and tropical, I had way too much to choose from.

Sun Rays Stencil - Whimsy Stamps

Sun Rays Stencil

I finally decided to use this beautiful sun rays stencil from Whimsy Stamps.

Adding Some Ink

To add color to the background, I used some Catherine Pooler inks from Party Collection: Spring Fling Ink Pad Bundle.

Her inks are one of my new favorites.  Trouble is, I don’t have a yellow from Catherine Pooler… yet.  And you can have sunshine without yellow.

So I pulled out a yellow “Butter Bar” mini ink pad from the Summer Splash 4-cube pack from Hero Arts.

It’s the perfect sunny shade of yellow. I applied the Butter Bar to the base of the sun rays using a blending brush.

Blending

I have a set of blending brushes from Picket Fence, and a set of makeup brushes from Amazon

and use them interchangeably. So I’m not sure which I used for this card.

Once I had a nice layer of yellow covering about a third of the card and radiating out from the center, I moved on to Bellini from Catherine Pooler and blended it at the edge with the Butter Bar.  For the top third-ish of the card did the same, using Sweet Sixteen to blend with Bellini.

More Blending

Then I removed the stencil.

I went back over everything with the same colors, causing a lighter shade of the same color to show where the background had been masked off.

Adding a Sentiment

Once the ink blending was finished, I used a ranger heat tool to speed up the ink drying.  The reason for this is that I’ll be adding a heat embossed sentiment to the front. I’m using WOW! Clear Embossing Powder over Versafine Onyx Black Ink. It probably wouldn’t have mattered all that much if the blending wasn’t completely dry. Except that there would have been some shiny bits in areas where I didn’t plan them.

The sentiment that I chose if from the “Seas the day seagulls” stamp set from Hero Arts.  It says “live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink the wild air – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Finishing Touches

To finish up the card, I popped up the panel on foam strips and added gems from Hobby Lobby.
